When I’m not writing this blog, I think about all the things I want to share with you, but then I put my fingers on ASDF JKL;, my mind goes blank.
What I Watched
I just rewatched this today. This movie is so good and is the inspo for male directors since then. Both John Woo and Jim Jarmusch remade versions with the Killers and Ghost Dog. Alain Delon takes his dead sexy blue eyes and commits an almost flawless hit, but persistent cops don’t buy his airtight alibi, and the guys who hired him don’t trust his getting away with it. It is stylish and quiet.
What I Read
I woke up and started perusing my Instagram like a junky when I read a quote from her on the Paris Review account. Part of it was, “You reading this, you’re here, alive, because your parents synced and you showed up. That’s it.” I closed my mouth and read the first story I could find that she wrote, There Is Love At Home (Gulf Coast, 2021), and was in awe of her writing. Two lines from her story popped out at me, “Divine liked her woman with age in their legs, with plotlines in their forehead and cheeks, and darkness behind the eyes.” and then further in the story, “…wallahi, she didn’t know it then, but my mother was raising me to feed you.” She just won the 2021 Plimpton Prize for Fiction for her story, Good Boy, which I will read soon.
What I Listened To
I am a huge spiritual jazz fan. Today I put on Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes’ Expansions. It is much bluesier than your usual spiritual jazz album. It is also more smooth and groovy and hints at acid jazz. I even get a little Steely Dan from some of the chord progressions. Sometimes in meditation, I need to get out of the syrupy and atmospheric tones and get an upbeat funk going.
What I Read
I checked Owls and Other Fantasies by Mary Oliver out of the library. I love her poetry, but I hadn’t read this one before, and I love birds. One of the magic of where I live is the number of birds I get to see up close, from raptors to songbirds. It is primarily poems, but there are too prose heavy essays as well. If you love birds, you should see them the way Mary Oliver does.
What Instagram I Looked At
@hoarder.vacui Sage Schmett makes tiny houses and rooms with so much detail that I have thought I was looking at someone’s real house and their rooms. Posters on the walls, decorations on the tables, plants, things left on the bed, clothes on the floor, rugs, and other things you find in our own houses, but there seem to be a magical realism to the models. Hey, Laika, you should see if she needs a job.
Impressive….you are an inspiration for me to explore beyond my normal fare. Thank you
